Why didn't Jesse Jackson or Gloria Aldred ever retire? Because they couldn't afford to.

Activists make a living on being... activists. So they can't afford to make progress or even solve their issue. If they did, they'd be out of a job. 

Here's a conservative take on activists and probably why you don't see that much conservative activism.

Be kind. Have grace. Give the benefit of the doubt. Seek common ground. Don't be afraid to ask questions. And never make assumptions about what people are thinking... or why.
