8. An Eagle Project that Changed Lives

Listen Later

I probably need to do an entire series on our journey adopting, like most people is an interesting one. I thought I’d share one of the many steps that laid the groundwork for two children coming into our home - our oldest son Devon's Eagle Project.  This is not only a story of service but one that literally opened my son's understanding of other people and cultures.

A couple of lessons from this experience:

  • Teach your kids to serve.
  • Allow them opportunities to serve. The Boy Scouts was a great opportunity for our kids but there are other avenues.
  • When your kids come up with a plan help them bring that plan too fruition.
  • Encourage them to act on their vision. Let them own it. Let them take the lead with you to counsel with when needed.
  • Let them expand on their original vision. It’s amazing what doors open once a child gets started on something.
  • Service will give them a different perspective of the world. Serving will teach them to put other people first. In Devon’s case it expanded his cultural view of the world that has enabled him to develop a love for all people.
  • This also was one of the many steps that led to our adopting two beautiful children into our home.  Let your kids dream and act big. You never know where their dreams will take them and your family will most definitely be blessed as well.
