#8 Hemp for Victory! - Hemp's role in WWII and beyond

Listen Later

Hemp has over 25,000 uses and has been harvested for about as long as humans have been around.  Since 1937 hemp has been illegal to harvest in the United States however that changed briefly in WWII.  Due to a shortage of hemp being imported from Asia (thanks to the Japs occupying much of the continent) the US government allowed waivers for farmers to encourage them to grow hemp.  It was mainly used for ropes and cordage Navy ships but it's uses are nearly endless.  In this show I give a brief summary about the history and of hemp, and then play the audio from a WWII propaganda movie produced by the department of agriculture.  This movie was created in order to explain the need for hemp, and to encourage farmers in Kentucky to apply for hemp licenses in order to supply the government this much needed commodity.  Enjoy!
