8. Running economy/efficiency and V̇O2max

A discussion between George and dad about running economy, efficiency and V̇O2max.

At times dad is a bit too loose with the terms - especially rates and power - and makes the odd accidental mistake too. It happens in an unedited conversation. But, if you are interested here are some papers to look at:

Running economy, Oxygen use by muscle (Fletcher and Hopkins, 1907), a sensible view on stretching with some references. Hopkins Nobel Prize (Vitamins, 1929 not 1936 as dad claimed), reflections on Hill and Lupton's V̇O2max. For 'heart beats per km' or 'meters per heart beat' the best (and first research work) I can find is Ville et al. (2014) although they refer to it a bit differently (Heart rate - running speed index) but it is exactly the same idea.
