80. The Singledom Episode: Choosing To Be Single In A Romance-Obsessed World
Since we all just celebrated Valentine's Day, we wanted to showcase a millennial who was going decidedly against the romantic grain by choosing to stay single. Edirin Edewor, who has lived in Nigeria her whole life but just moved to Dubai during the pandemic, has faced pressure from family and people in her community to find a partner her whole life but instead chose to focus on her career. She has published bestselling books, is an internationally acclaimed inspirational speaker, and teaches masterclasses on online publishing.
We talk about the climate around romance and finding a partner in Nigeria, which heavily prioritizes finding a romantic partner and having children, to the extent that a Nigerian mom will often say to their daughters, "Are you going to act that way in your husband's house?" and single women will often put off buying a house or getting a promotion for fear that this level of independence will be seen as threatening to a potential husband.
So no matter how satisfied or lonely you may have felt this past Valentine's Day, we hope you will take a moment to consider the role you really want romance and partnership to have in your life, and join us in questioning how those global norms can adversely affect not only women who are primed their whole lives for marriage, but also men who our heteronormative society is also not teaching to properly care for themselves with the expectation that they will have a wife to do that for them.
