The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the most decisive and devastating battles of World War II. It was fought from August 1942 to February 1943 in and around the city of Stalingrad in the Soviet Union. The battle was between the German and Italian forces of the Axis powers, led by General Friedrich Paulus, and the Soviet forces of the Red Army, led by General Georgy Zhukov.
