Nikki Sanchez is a Media Maker, Decolonial Educator, Wild Guide and PhD. Nikki spends her days doing many important and impactful things. She creates documentary and educational media and designs programs to support and foster emerging indigenous filmmakers. She is a wilderness guide and ecological educator — doing land-based work with indigenous and non-indigenous people to help them reconnect themselves to the land and to simultaneously heal themselves and the landscape they live on. Nikki is also currently completing her PhD looking at immersive visual media and indigenous ontology. All of Nikki’s work is interconnected and contributes to her work as a Decolonial Educator. “It’s not accidental that I have chosen to focus a lot on the educational work I do on decolonization, because I truly believe that the world views and economic systems that were enacted as part of the colonial project of nation building are the root and crux of why we are globally facing potentially catastrophic climate change impacts and completely unsustainable and unviable, not only environmental systems, but economic and social systems as well.” Tune in to hear Nikki and Steph talk climate change, decolonization, the crisis in Mauna Kea, and how it’s all connected.
