Americans pay more for healthcare than people from any other developed country, but it doesn't work as well as it should. Why would anyone pay so much for something so crappy? I think the answer lies in the fact that we don't know how good it could be. We know how bad it is, but we don't know how to fix it, and we won't know until we improve it.
