In 2016, Lulu Wang shared her familial story with This American Life, and it was so poignant to the immigrant experience, that it was made into a movie. After both American and Chinese film studios tried to get her to change the tone of the film, four different indie film production companies picked up her script and gave her the creative freedom to tell her true story.
