The Spokane Falls Review, which was founded in 1883, and The Spokesman, founded in 1890, are the forerunners of The Spokesman-Review, Spokane's primary daily newspaper. These competing newspapers merged in 1893 and took the name The Spokane Review.
The Spokesman-Review was renamed by publisher and sole owner William Hutchinson Cowles in 1894. For more than five decades, Cowles would continue to serve as the paper's publisher and grow it into the Lilac City's preeminent daily. It was a 1993 Pulitzer Prize nominee, and was named one of the top 25 newspapers in the nation in 1999.
