Kate Had Me Meet... Two Men of Minneapolis.
Some of you know, I'm not shy about asking questions and seeking conversations... even if it means walking up to strangers. I was blessed to have two different men, nearly a year apart, share at random during two very raw and emotional times for the Minneapolis area.
Last summer, in the week after the murder of George Floyd, I met the first gentleman near the memorial site. It is my goal to track down his name- my phone appears to have deleted all of my old texts! :( He shares what it was like to grow up spending a lot of time in the Powderhorn neighborhood where George was killed. Also, he shares his thoughts about racism and his life goals.
The second interview was again, on the fly, and really... special. Willie's apartment has been caught in the literal crossfire of police and military presence in the days following Daunte Wright's death. Protests and community gatherings had taken over the streets, and law enforcement didn't hold back on rubber bullets, tear gas, and grenades. One week after Daunte's death, I stopped by Willie's apartment and asked to chat. He is 60 years old, and shares his perspectives on being a black man, racism, and hopes.
An honor to bring these voices to you. May you be better and richer for it.
