An orthopaedic surgeon who became vice speaker of the Pennsylvania House and then AMA president, Andrew Gurman, MD, FAAOS, strongly believes that physician advocacy is a professional responsibility. Through his leadership roles, Dr. Gurman has pushed for better, more affordable care for patients across the country, affecting far more people than he would ever see one-on-one. Dr. Gurman, as the 2022 AAOS Tipton Leadership Award winner, shares the lessons he's learned about embracing opportunities and stepping up to responsibility, as well as how to start a conversation with your local representative.
