Do you remember buying your first single? Album? CD? Once upon a time there were only albums, singles, cassettes and 8-tracks, and in the early 1980s there came a new format, a format that changed everything, the same way the LP changed the world of 45s. The Compact Disc (did you remember that is what CD stood for?) and with it came a whole new listening experience. The first big-selling CD was Dire Straits classic album Brothers In Arms. We pay a visit to London to talk about that.
Sixteen years prior, in Canada, John Lennon ushers in a new folk/protest song. A song so powerful it is still sung at peace rallys..."Give Peace A Chance", and that recording gives Tony and I a chance to take The Way-Back Music Machine to somewhere in Canada. That's right we stay right here in the Great White North. But don't get too comfortable, we are off to California.
He may have been a recording genius and brilliant song writer, but he was also a convicted murderer. Of course it is Phil Spector. We could spend hours talking about him, but we introduce a topic that will stay with you dfor a little while.
All that plus charts, classic ads, and much more on this week, Episode 9 of The Way-Back Music Machine. And if you want to hear some of these great songs, they are all collected for you in a brand new Spotify playlist.
