$90 million shark safety plan: Are nets, drumlines and drones really the answer?

Queensland’s Shark Control Program is about to get a historic shake-up with almost $90 million to be spent on new shark nets, more drumlines and expanded drone patrols across the state.

However, the expansion has sparked serious backlash from many critics after a federal government-commissioned report found that the upgrades will breach national environmental protections.

Associate Professor of Environmental Science at Bond University and a leading expert on shark-human interactions Dr Daryl McPhee told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "Regardless of how much the government spends and what it does, there are still likely to be unprovoked shark bites in Queensland waters."

"We have a lot of sharks and a lot of people going in the water."
