Charlie Machell is an English professional footballer who currently plays for Visakha in the Cambodian League, the top division of Cambodian football. Since he began in the Newcastle United academy, he has also played collegiately in the United States, and professionally in Denmark, Faroe Islands, and Singapore. Playing in Southeast Asia has given him an abundance of experiences, including winning a league title with Cambodian side, Svay Rieng FC.
The aim of this podcast is to make players aware of the opportunities that exist in Southeast Asia, by providing a real insight into what life is like, on and off the pitch. In this podcast, we cover:
- How he found an opportunity in Cambodia, and why he decided to make the jump to Southeast Asia
- Adjusting to life as a foreigner in Southeast Asia
- The biggest challenges he faced
- Football culture in Southeast Asia
- Transferring to Singapore
- What a typical week in his life looks like
- Advice for players looking to play in Southeast Asia
This is a truly insightful episode and one I really enjoyed recording. Charlie's journey shows that if you are prepared to put yourself outside your comfort zone, you can reap the rewards both on and off the pitch.
