The History Of The Evergreen State

94- Twisp in the Methow Valley

Listen Later

Twisp is a small town located in the Methow Valley region of Okanogan County, Washington. The town's history dates back to the late 1800s when the first settlers arrived in the area. The town was named after the Twisp River, which flows through the area and is a tributary of the Methow River.
In 1888, John Twisp, a surveyor, and his partner, Robert S. Fitch, opened a trading post and hotel in the area. The trading post served as a gathering place for the local residents, and the hotel provided lodging for travelers passing through the area. The post office was established in 1897, and the town was officially incorporated in 1905.
Twisp quickly became a hub for agriculture, logging, and mining in the surrounding areas. The town's economy was heavily dependent on these industries, and it grew rapidly during the early 1900s. In 1907, the town's first sawmill was built, which brought more jobs and prosperity to the area.
Throughout the 20th century, Twisp continued to grow and develop, but it also faced some challenges. The Great Depression and World War II had a significant impact on the town's economy, and many of its residents left to find work elsewhere. In the 1960s and 1970s, the town experienced a resurgence as people began to move back to the area, drawn by its natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities.
Today, Twisp is a thriving community with a population of around 1,000 people. It is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, who come to hike, fish, ski, and explore the area's many natural wonders. The town also has a vibrant arts community, with galleries, studios, and workshops showcasing the work of local artists and artisans.
In summary, Twisp's history is one of growth, change, and resilience. From its humble beginnings as a trading post and hotel, the town has evolved into a vibrant and thriving community, thanks to the hard work and determination of its residents.
