In this episode, I sat down with Ray Morcomb of Evolution Martial arts.
Born with a vision impairment, Ray tried his best growing up to 'fit in', going to a regular school and trying to do what he could despite his lack of vision.
I met Ray through martial arts and when you see Ray move, the fluidity of his striking and the control he has over his body is a great thing to watch.
Most people today would only notice he might look a little cross eyed but have no idea that he would struggle to see who you are.
Being a smaller kid would make him the target of bullying and the way Ray is able to reflect on it is so admirable. Even to get together for our podcast, Ray caught the train, walked to where we recorded because he isn't allowed to drive.
Despite all of this, Ray never gave up on pursuing Martial arts, from his parents pushing him to Karate to help with the bullying, to training with boxing Australian royalty like Johnny Lewis, Kostya Tszyu and Gairy St Claire to not being able to find someone to sanction him to fight due to his vision.
I made this comment that although he may have been born with his eyesight as a 2/10, he has been blessed to really have great relationships in life.
Ray even runs a program at a local high school to offer Mixed Martial Arts to high school students as part of their sport program.
I really enjoyed this episode and I hope you all do as well.
