A Chat with Andrea Tooley, MD

Listen Later

In this episode, I'm joined by my guest Dr. Andrea Tooley MD. Upon completing her residency at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Tooley went on to complete a fellowship in Oculoplastic Surgery and Orbital Disease at Cornell University before coming back to Rochester, Minnesota to join the faculty at the Mayo Clinic as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. Dr. Tooley has had an illustrious career followed by thousands around the world through her blog, website, Youtube Channel, and Instagram page. This year, with the help of Dr. Janice Law MD and Dr. Usiwoma Abugo MD, the three came up with the idea to form the Virtual Mentorship Program. This program was made to connect medical students interested in ophthalmology with remote mentors in the field to help guide them through a challenging year. With over 600 students mentees and 200 physicians mentors signing up, the initiative was a massive success. Dr. Tooley gives us her insights into the daily life of an oculoplastic surgeon, why she loves the specialty, and the artistic nature of oculoplastic surgery when dealing with the aesthetics of orbital symmetry. Finally, she explains the passion she has for the Mayo Clinic and why the residency program is suited for those looking for a strong balance between autonomy and guidance from leaders in the field.
