A guilty conscience can have a devastating effect upon our tranquility and peace. Genuine guilt is not identical with guilt feelings. Sin causes real guilt, but forgiveness in Christ clears the conscience. If we do not recognize this, Satan can play on our emotions and make us feel guilty when our sin has been forgiven.
