Publisher's Summary:
Begin. I am 10 now. Ten, two times, five times, one a million times over if I want. Or 10, 10 ones are 10 every time. Ten. Dad says it's Asperger's, syndrome is a sickness, not like a bellyache but sometimes an earache or a brainache. AS means that some things that other kids think are easy are not so easy for me, and some things that other people think are hard are simple as pie for me. Look, look, look. Follow me, do not follow, look. That is what they say. They: Jan, Mom, Dad, Lucy. Look. They want to know what I remember. I remember everything.
Follow the story of Leonard Anthony Pearce: brilliant, articulate, ambitious. And living each day with the challenges and opportunities of high-functioning autism, making his way in a confusing world.

Walk a lifetime with AS
When I started reading this, I thought it would be perfect for my 10yo to read. My 10yo struggles with many of the OCD issues and completely logical thinking that are found in people with AS. He has never been tested or diagnosed, but I thought it would help. The writing style was very confusing for him, so he stopped reading with the comment, "It doesn't make sense!" When I read it to him, and the rest of the family, we all loved it!
A wonderful story to help us tolerate each other. For all the children who are being drugged up for ADD or ADHD - and the parents who drug them - I say read this, and find alternative methods to help you cope with society and its rules. You will be much happier!
I think we all have "A Close Approximation of an Ordinary Life." Thank you Meryl McQueen for writing a book which helps me appreciate mine.
Teacher of Aspy students
I am an SLP in a private school for children on the spectrum and used this book as social thinking class lessons. I read the book to them. As an assignment, I asked them to review the book. Comments I received were all positive, including one who wrote "I can see my future and I am glad it could be successful". I enjoyed reading the book, I learned a lot about the brain of a child on the spectrum and my students were happy to see that they are not alone.
A Beautiful View of AS
As someone with Asperger's Syndrome, this short yet fruitful book gave me the burst of hope I needed on a difficult day. I've only recently starting reading more first-person accounts of having Asperger's, and each time I do, it is a very positive experience. As I am in a relationship with someone without AS, I find it important to share this kind of information with them so they can learn as much about it as they can. I would have loved more stories about Len's time working as an ornithologist. Otherwise, it was a great read.
Good Book
Read this book and I highly reccomend it to anyone who wants to learn about Autism... I am a mother of an Aspie son and this book is very good. Though my son is very high functioning he did go through therapy. This book is a good introduction to Autsim. Eventhough the saying "Once you met someone with autism you met someone with autism". A child diagnosed with Autism is not like anyother child with autsim...They may have similar behaviors but that is about it. Read this book and learn about these wonderful children.
Absorbing and accessible
As a teacher who has taught many students with AS throughout my career, I found this book to be eye-opening.
