Get to know a talented musician in this new episode of Junubia Girl Talks Creatives Series!
As one of the emerging voices out of East Africa, Lujang is a South Sudanese Singer, Songwriter, and Guitarist whose sound is as distinct and intriguing as his story. Like many musicians, he comes from a musical home. His parents first met in their church choir, they played the guitar and were one of his first musical influences. Lujang naturally went on to pick up the guitar and spent time developing his talent. In 2015 after the loss of his father, he was faced with figuring out a way forward and how to make ends meet. He thought about the talent he had cultivated all his life and decided to put it to use. Lujang took a chance at playing at his friend’s high end restaurant to see what would come of it. Playing at the high end restaurant was one of his first encounters with an audience. He enjoyed playing the guitar and went on to sing using a microphone while performing.
Shy and inexperienced, he succeeded at having only a venue, his guitar and his passion to get him through. As he became known for his talent, a year later he began making rounds performing at weddings and baby showers in his community. Although Lujang was a student in Journalism he never wandered far from music. He eventually took a leap of faith to leave school and decided that music was going to be the center of his life. He went on to release his first single titled “No Place Like Home” a blend of acoustic vibrations, soothing vocals and poetry. Today his fan base is steadily growing both offline and online as his music is easy to hear from anywhere in the world via streaming and YouTube.
In A Conversation with Lujang: Junubia Girl Talks Creatives Series we discovered that his talent and vision is not only limited to music. He is passionate about community and co founded Junubin Market KE, a pop up marketplace in Nairobi. The emerging and vibrant market doubles as a cultural hub and gathering spot for South Sudanese “Junubin” and Kenyans. It’s a magnet for creatives, local merchants, patrons and the like to network, shop, eat and enjoy art and music. On 27th of May there will be a Pop Up Market at Two Grapes Wine & Friends in Nairobi off George Padmore Road – Kilimani. The event will take place from 10am – 6pm. Patrons can shop, enjoy karaoke, face painting, food and music with a live DJ.
When Lujang is not organizing events for the market, he’s most likely working on music. While his new single is set to release soon, fans can stay up to date about announcements, upcoming performances and other acoustic sessions by following his socials @lujang____.
Lujang’s inspiring journey teaches the importance of following your passion. It’s an example of how essential it is to nurture your talent in its’ early stages. It’s a gentle reminder that we can all live meaningful lives by doing what we love and by pursuing a greater purpose beyond ourselves.
