Meta (the company that runs Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and a plethora of other social media apps) announced a series of changes to its content moderation policies and enforcement strategies that would, in essence, dismantle its system that protects against the spread of misinformation.

Since Jan.7, Meta has ended its fact-checking partnerships, stopping automatic scans of content that violates policies and ceased penalising content in its algorithm that is found to be spreading misinformation. TL:DR version – Meta is entering its post-truth era.
Roll in multiple governments attempts at banning the use of X in their jurisdictions in the last 12 months, and a possible TikTok ban in the US, and one could be forgiven for thinking that the social media universe is a dumpster fire that should be avoid at all costs. The burgeoning number of active users (3 billion and counting), however, suggest otherwise.
