It’s a “dog eat dog world” they say and only the fittest survive. Such notions are used to justify all kinds of unethical and untenable behaviors! So when someone is reminded that Islam teaches us حياء (often translated as modesty) they become skeptical. How can we practice such a virtue in a world where timidity and modesty are punished and boldness and flamboyance are rewarded? We forget that even Allah (swt) practices حياء and God is never in a position of weakness. So what does this virtue truly mean and what does it teach us about how we should be have in the face of a world filled with challenges?
