The importance of blood in these stories.  It is associated with maturity and death, and new life, the cycles of nature.  Also, blood dropping to the ground may be a kind of psychological seeding or offering, since it’s a sacrifice.  From a discussion on the Brothers Grimm’s “The Juniper Tree”
