You probably take water for granted. Whether it is drinking water, cool
and clean, or water for washing, or water for some other purpose, most
of us have had very little experience where water was scarce. That is
not the case around the world today, and it is very unusual
historically. Most of the people who have lived understood the
life-threatening danger of a water shortage. As we begin Psalms, we
read about a life that is well-watered and able to withstand the
drought. Try to put yourself in the mindset of the first ones to read
this (or sing it) and the many billions of people who understood from
first-hand experience how much of a privilege it would be to have plenty
of water. We’ll see how the writer uses this picture to teach us about a
life that can stand up to the heat and weather that each of us face in
this life... and a soul that can stand before the Creator when this life
