If he does, he's in violation of an agreement he made years before to save his life. Still, he doesn't want to let these struggling kids down. He pleads his case for an exception and gets permission to go, and though he's tempted to break the terms of the agreement, he thinks first of the kids he's there to guide. When one of the students comes down with appendicitis, a trip to the ER puts Mears in a situation he knows will cost him his job and a future in the place he's come to call home. Moreover, it could cost him his life.

You Won't Want to Put This Book Down
Who wouldn't want to go to NYC to see "Hamilton"? When a group of underprivileged kids worked their butts off to go, high school teacher Brendan Mears was assigned to be a chaperone. There's only one problem - he once agreed to stay put in exchange for his life. He pleads an exception and is given permission to go. Unfortunately one of his students falls ill and he has to accompany them to the hospital - where he runs into a situation he was told to avoid at all costs.
When reading this book, I was immediately concerned for the main character's well-being. He seems like a good guy who might have been in the wrong place at the wrong time or made a bad decision. A bad decision doesn't make someone a bad person, though. The internal struggles the main character goes through are as engaging as his external conflicts and relationships with everyone from his guardian to his co-workers to the students he's chaperoning. The events are perfectly paced so you will not want to put this book down. (I read it in one sitting!)
Although this book is a standalone story, fans of the author's other works will be surprised to see a returning character. And if you like this story, then you will want to read the author's debut full-length novel, A WAR OF DECEPTION.
