On a hot day in July 1919, five black youths went swimming in Lake Michigan, unintentionally floating close to the white beach. An angry white man began throwing stones at the boys, striking and killing one. Racial conflict on the beach erupted into days of urban violence that shook the city of Chicago to its foundations. This mesmerizing narrative draws on contemporary accounts as it traces the roots of the explosion that had been building for decades in race relations, politics, business, and clashes of culture.

A thought-provoking read
This is a compelling and informative book for teens and adult readers. What the author selected to present from her historical research, how she structured the story and excellent writing throughout make this an engaging and thought-provoking read.
Fascinating and timely read
This is a fascinating book. The author uses the Chicago Race Riot of 1919 as a launching point for an in-depth exploration of Chicago history and the forces that led to the riot. So many of the social tensions existing during that time are present today, albeit with different players. A truly timely read in light of the social clashes we're now experiencing.
This is a fascinating and engaging look back at one ...
This is a fascinating and engaging look back at one of the most important times in Chicago's history. The book details not only Chicago's 1919 race riots but the long history of segregation and oppression that lead to the conditions that made these events possible and inevitable. An important read for anyone interested in the history of Chicago and the effects of racial division in the United States.
Interesting topic, less-than-stellar execution
I wanted to like this, but it was such a struggle to get through. The content and topic were great, super intense and very informative, but oh man this was such a dry read. Even as someone who reads nonfiction regularly it read like a textbook which is why it took me so long to get through.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.
