You might not expect a film that opens with a funeral and revolves around a support group for those who have lost their identical twin to be a source of uproarious laughter, but James Sweeney's "Twinless" proves otherwise. It's a brilliant, darkly humorous treasure that kept me laughing from beginning to end. This movie is a remarkable achievement in tone, skillfully balancing a genuinely sorrowful premise with some of the sharpest and most surprising humor I've encountered on screen this year.
The charm of "Twinless" is found in the incredible chemistry between its two main actors. Dylan O'Brien portrays Roman, a stoic man engulfed in grief, completely lost after the passing of his vibrant twin brother, Rocky. At a support group for the "twinless," he unexpectedly forms a friendship with Dennis, played by the film's writer and director, James Sweeney. Their relationship is comedic gold. O'Brien's deadpan, often bewildered responses to the world serve as the ideal counterpoint to Sweeney's neurotic, quick-witted, and hilariously awkward Dennis. Every interaction they share, from grocery shopping to attending a Halloween party, is filled with clever quips and painfully awkward moments that are absolutely hilarious.
