Saving Rachel Part Deux
Too bad Charlie Sheen's gone off the deep end, because he'd be the guy to play Donovan Creed: just the right amount of comic intensity, overt sexuality and sheer lunacy to pull it off.
When Rachel gets snatched from her protected penthouse by government agents, Creed has no choice but to enlist Rachel's cuckolded husband/savant Sam Case to try to save her--again. Think wacky water moccasin high jinx.
It's nice to see Creed back on center-stage after the past couple of books, doing what he does best: scaring the crap out of people.
I have no idea how long this book is. I read it in a couple hours. Locke crams so much action into a few pages, one hardly feels cheated. At times, the comic dialogue seems a bit forced, however.
A GIRL LIKE YOU suggests that Creed will soon be out fighting terrorists. I look forward to that. Four and a half stars for this one.
over the top
The hero is unbelievably rich with extremely good looks. The book makes light of murder and every person, be it man, woman or child gets murdered in the most horrific ways by the so called hero and the hero attempts to justify it with unreal excuses. Mr. Locke has been steadily writing more fantastic plots and circumstances which are not exactly entertaining, just discusting. I have read his earlier books and the first one was okay but each and every book thereafter got more violent and more absurd than the preceding book.
My first time with Donovan Creed
I have never read John Locke books or any of the Donovan Creed series. I read "A Girl like You" in half a day. Obviously I enjoyed it. What struck me the most is how much of this book adheres to the Pulp Fiction genre. The Hero (or Anti-Heroe, depending on your point of view) is indestrucible, nefarious, calculating and is imbued with near mythic physical and intellectual powers. I thought the book was a hoot. Few authors today write for pure entertainment. John Locke does not try to be deep or message-heavy. He tries and succeeds at being a rocket-ride of a read. I actually read part of this book out-loud to my husband and he didn't complain.
I could easily see this book as a Frank Miller illustrated Comic Book. I could see Bruce Willis as Donovan Creed. In other words, the Creed books read very visually.
I was thoroughly entertained. Junk food is great for the heart and soul once in a while.
Five Stars
I love the series
Slam, Bam...
I have to confess I didn't *mind* this book even though it was written in first person present tense. However, I found it a shallow, quick read without nuance or substance.
