Performing artists add colour, beauty and disturbance to our world. Actors, musicians, singers, dancers, comedians: they all engage us and move us in different ways. But their inner lives can be complex places, and the research suggests they are at greater risk of mental health difficulties than others. They're 10 times more likely to experience anxiety, five times more likely to experience depression, and twice as likely to take their own life. As much as they are adored for their talents, performing artists are often perceived as hyper-emotional, reckless and self-absorbed. Are these stereotypes fair or is there more to the story?
