A Heart for Marriage

In today’s message on Restoring the Families, we continue discussing the importance of the heart in relationships—specifically, having a heart for marriage. Marriage is a lifelong journey, and building it on the right foundation is essential.

A good heart in marriage fosters integrity, empathy, sacrificial love, and honest communication. It becomes the foundation that carries couples beyond attraction and through life’s inevitable challenges. No two people agree on everything—conflict is normal—but a heart shaped by God’s wisdom brings patience, mercy, and sincerity (James 3:17).

Marriage is not 50/50; it’s 100/100. Each spouse must give fully, choosing to serve rather than be served. Ephesians 5 reminds husbands to love their wives sacrificially and wives to respect their husbands. True love requires selflessness.

Often, we enter marriage with unspoken expectations shaped by our upbringing. But marriage shifts the focus from “me” to “we.” It calls for growth, humility, and sacrifice. When children enter the picture, that lesson deepens even more.

A good heart also creates emotional safety, mutual respect, forgiveness, and long-term commitment beyond physical attraction. As Matthew 19:6 reminds us, what God joins together is meant to remain united.

Ultimately, a strong marriage is built on character, not circumstances. Kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and sacrificial love protect the bond and strengthen the relationship over time.
