A Houston Football Story: The AFL Years (1/4)

Listen Later

In the late 1950s, Houston was a boomtown of unapologetic new money, but to the old guard of the NFL, it was a backwater. This is the story of how a stinging rejection from that private club pushed a young, swaggering Texas oilman named Bud Adams to do the unthinkable. Fueled by pure revenge and a bottomless bank account, he and another spurned Texan, Lamar Hunt, didn't just knock on the NFL's door. They built their own league next door, the AFL. Out of that defiance, the Houston Oilers were born. From scavenging for misfit players like the legendary George Blanda to winning back-to-back championships in a league everyone called a joke, this is the story of a rebellion that put Houston on the pro football map and ultimately forced the creation of the modern NFL.
