Petersfield's Shine Radio

A Knitters Guide to World War One

Listen Later

Historical Hand Knitter Joyce Meader, whose period knitwear has featured in films like War Horse and 1917, has a new book out about knitting in the First World War; she collects old patterns and then knits the garments.

She gave an engrossing and entertaining talk at Petersfield Bookshop on Thursday 13 March about knitting at home for soldiers in the trenches; they had Comfort Committees where knitting was arranged and patriotic songs about knitting were played and sung at the piano..

She related how soldiers would receive a pair of socks and give one to a pal.

What everyone has today, a beanie or a bob hat, was originally a helmet liner, worn under the helmet.

A Knitter's Guide to world War 1; featuring thirty war time kitting patterns by Joyce Meader, published by Crowood, £18.99
