A Land of Milk and Honey
Have you ever wondered about that phrase - the Land of Milk and Honey? How could that be considered as an attractive place to go, and equally concerning, what exactly is a land of "milk and honey"? This question has plagued me for quite a while, and recently, another question has risen, which is: exactly where is the "land of milk and honey"? Given the names that are given to us in scripture, can we tell where these places are today? Even more alarming is the evidence which is increasing constantly that sea level has likely changed dramatically over the course of human history, in most cases being much lower than what it is today. Some evidence suggests possible 100-150 feet lower (if so, England would be connected to France via a land bridge), but many suggest even greater ranges. It is possible that a cooler earth may have trapped an enormous ice field over North America, reaching all the way to the Great Lakes, which would have sequestered a substantial body of water in such a massive ice cap, and such an ice cap then rendering a substantially lower sea level. If the sea was 200 or more lower than today, the world geography changes dramatically. The North Sea emerges as dry land (and in fact, some historical references refer to this place as Doggerland); Ireland would have been attached to Scotland (maybe over the Giant's Causeway) and England would have been directly connected to France (no Strait of Dover). Equally true, Africa would have had a much more substantial reach into the Mediterranean Sea - possibly even connecting the Island of Malta to the African mainland.In addition, maps from the 15th and 16th centuries show Northern Africa as a green area, replete with multiple rivers and lakes in an area that is now all desert. Recent archeological discoveries are changing the content of what we know about the world dramatically. In all of this comes the nagging question: Is the Holy Land really the true site of Yerushalayim? Is Israel the true site of the land of Canaan? Where was the Garden of Eden? How about the tower of Babel? Are we certain we know the identity of the true Euphrates River?And just exactly where is the land of milk and honey?
