The pilgrims of the Plymouth Plantation celebrated a Thanksgiving Festival in 1621. George Washington, declared a day of Thanksgiving in 1789. Abraham Lincoln declared a national day of Thanksgiving in 1863. President Roosevelt did the same in 1941. Something is going on here. What is going on is the importance of giving thanks to God.

Jesus entered our world to bring God's salvation to all of humanity. One time, there were a group of men healed by Jesus from a tragic illness. In the midst of that healing we are given a lesson in giving thanks. The lesson was that if we have been so touched by Jesus, we MUST return thanks to him. If we do not, then something is wrong. The only way to right the wrong is to drop to our knees and do what we should have done: return thanks to God for Jesus Christ.
