Often, when we talk about adoption, it’s easy to focus on the couple who have discerned that the Lord is calling them to adopt. And, that is a beautiful part of the story - one I’ve featured on past Letters to Women episodes, in fact.

But I think that the other side of the story, the experience of a woman making an adoption plan for her unborn child, is something we don’t focus on enough. What does it look like to be truly pro-life and to support these women at all stages of their motherhood?

In today’s episode, I’m sitting down with Makayla Carmichael.

When she was seventeen years old, Makayla chose adoption for her daughter. We talk about her experience making an adoption plan, the resources that she wished would have existed during that season of her life, and the advice and encouragement she would give to women who find themselves in a similar situation of considering adoption for their unborn children.

Maybe you clicked “play” on this episode because you are in a situation where you’re discerning adoption for your unborn baby. Or, maybe you want to learn more about supporting women as they make an adoption plan in the face of an unexpected pregnancy. Regardless of the place or seasons that you find yourself in as you listen into this conversation, sister, this letter is for you

Topics we talked about in this episode:

What led Makayla to make an adoption plan for her daughter

What making an adoption plan looks like practically

What healing has looked like in Makayla’s story and how healing for her looks like Mary

Makayla’s motherhood in her daily life today, through her pregnancy with her daughter, and after the adoption

The encouragement and advice that Makayla would give a mother who finds herself considering adoption

How we can support women who chose life in all stages of life

Simcha Fisher writes and speaks about why and how Mary truly understands our suffering; and about the sensation of helplessness that so often comes along with motherhood and with love in general.
