A Living Sacrifice - Renewed Mind and Body

Listen Later

This sermon from Apostle Allison Smith Conliff centers on the biblical call to live as a holy sacrifice, as outlined in Romans 12. The Apostle emphasizes that true transformation requires a complete renewal of the mind, urging believers to reject worldly behaviors and stay humble regardless of their status. Using the life of the Apostle Paul as a model, it's stressed that salvation comes through faith rather than works. The message further warns against spiritual complacency, encouraging the congregation to be vigilant in prayer and committed to their specific roles within the body of Christ. Summarily, the Apostle highlights the importance of trusting God’s protection and maintaining integrity during times of physical or spiritual hardship.

Key Points:

Sacrifice and spiritual discipline are foundational to fulfilling one's divine purpose, as they facilitate a transformation that aligns a believer's life with God's will. These elements work together to prepare an individual for their specific assignment on earth.

  • Presenting a "Living Sacrifice": Fulfilling purpose begins with the act of presenting one's body as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God. This is described as a "reasonable service" in response to what God has already done.
  • Enabling Divine Work: Because humans are spirits housed in flesh, the body must be presented to God so the "spirit man" can perform the work intended for it. By giving oneself truly to God, rather than holding a portion back like the biblical figures Ananias and Sapphira, a person allows God to perform the necessary transitions and changes required for their calling.
  • Reciprocity of Sacrifice: The sacrifices made for God eventually "come back" to the individual, as God is looking for men and women who will be obedient to His call to fulfill their destiny.
  • Renewing the Mind: A central discipline for fulfilling purpose is the renewal of the mind. This process prevents a believer from being conformed to the world’s systems and instead transforms them into a "new person" who can discern God's "good and pleasing and perfect will". This transformation is essential to avoid being a "slave to Satan" through worldly conformity.
  • The Power of Meditation on the Word: Discipline in meditation is crucial because what an individual meditates on, they will eventually act out. Believers are encouraged to ensure their meditations are acceptable to God, using the word of God to "pull from heaven" during times of pain, sickness, or grief.
  • Prayer and Vigilance: Spiritual discipline includes the commitment to prayer and vigilance, even when "sleep is a luxury". Fulfilling one's purpose requires being in tune with the "frequency of heaven" through constant communication with God.
  • Humility and Self-Assessment: Part of the spiritual walk involves the discipline of humility. Believers are warned not to think of themselves more highly than they ought, but to be honest in their self-estimates and remain humble regardless of their status or blessings.

Every person has a special function or work to do within the "body of Christ," much like different organs in a physical body have specific roles. Through sacrifice and discipline, individuals are empowered to:

  • Perform duties assigned from heaven, whether that involves ministry in a sanctuary or praying for one's family from a bed.
  • Stay effective in their specific field and complete their assignment on earth before their "time to go home".
  • Respond to evil with good and maintain the "fear of God," which keeps them from sin and guides them to treat others correctly.
