A Long Term Perspective One Baby-Step at a Time

Listen Later

Choosing a Goal and taking Baby steps

We often want to set goals but do not have the right long-term perspective and focus to achieve those goals. It takes a lifetime to build a life and it takes more than one day to achieve that life. We should not be trying to have everything set to be finished by tomorrow. Making decisions is half the battle, that we can do today, but we should not just make any decisions. It needs to be with a long-term perspective in mind.

Making a Long-Term Plan

It is easy to get excited about a goal. We can create the goal easily enough. But when the time comes to act, the motivation is gone because we put too much pressure on ourselves.

Long term perspective can really hurt you, if you do not plan well. Suppose you decide to lose 40lb. If before working out you think, “I have to lose 40lb” you will be overwhelmed. You will be less likely to stick to your goal.

Long Term Perspective Teaches How to Have the Right Long-Term Plan

So, long term thinking can be bad if we do not use it in the right way. We need to plan out steps. You need to make a decision after setting the goal and planning out your steps. “What am I going to do tomorrow, what am I going to do the next day?”

It’s starts with baby steps. The first day can simply be getting up out of bed. Get dressed and put your running shoes on. End it there. Then the next day do the same things. Just take it one day at a time, pushing yourself to go a little farther each day.

Long Term Perspective Tells Us What is Important to Us

We have to decide what is important to us and plan to achieve those goals. Encourage yourself with every step, even the baby steps are important and a step in the right direction.

Everyday you do this, you are starting to set a routine. You will start creating better habits and start achieving your goals.

Giving Yourself Time to Achieve Your Goals

We do not have to kill ourselves to achieve these goals. We can take as much time as we need. That way we can actually maintain our goals.

It will change your whole way of thinking. Once you start creating habits, you feel more confident and encouraged to keep pushing yourself, and it will become easier.

You do not start out running 10 miles, you start with a short walk. That could be just down to your mailbox and back. You work up to the 10 miles or whatever your goal is. Just do not stop going. When you start going laps, you may have the goal to go 10 laps. But you do not start out thinking, “I have to go ten laps now”. You start with one lap. After that, you go one more lap, and so forth until you reach your goal.

Find something you can do right now, that is something you can continue to do and grow in.

God sees the goals you are working towards and the effort you are putting in to achieve those goals.
