Rebecca Gerendasy | Episode 1186

Rebecca Gerendasy has been a creator all her life, and clay is her first love. Majoring in sculpture in college, she later built a career as a video journalist and filmmaker before returning to clay full-time. Focused on hand-building, Rebecca draws inspiration from her surroundings and human nature, looking for the magic in the everyday and bringing it to life with expression, color and surface illustration in her figurative and functional ceramics.

What’s one thing that’s got you really challenged right now?
I think the challenge right now is coming off of all the heavy making, making, making, because of the holidays and all the fall fairs and art festivals, and showing at different galleries, and feeling like you are going seven days a week as long as you could manage every day and then boom, you feel like you can breathe right now.
How do you balance the momentum of a studio and work without burning out?
I think for me, I need to take the breaks, and take the breaks without guilt and just say, Okay, time to stop. Go outside for fresh air. Go do my exercises at the pool. Or just stop and look at a book or sometimes just look in the back yard.
What kind of advice would you give to someone trying to find their voice in their making?
I think a big part, as I mentioned earlier, is to keep working. Keep at it. Even if it’s just 15 minutes of sketching or making a doodle, or get the watercolors out and then walk away. Maybe the next day you will take an ink pen to it or get some scissors out and make a collage. But just keep at creating at some level that you can.
What’s got you excited in the studio?
I think I’m excited about starting new mono-prints. Starting new designs. It’s like Christmas time every time I peel that paper back and I get to see the results.
What skill would you like to master that you don’t have under your belt now?
I would say large, sculptural, figurative pieces. I mean large. 4, 5, 6 feet tall. I would like to put it in my yard and decorate it also. That would be great! That’s coming.
