Remembering John McCain
John McCain was the son and grandson of Navy admirals, but he carved out his own career. After an indifferent college career at the Naval Academy, he became a fighter pilot. In 1967, he was shot down over North Vietnam and spent almost six years in the notorious Hanoi Hilton, two of them in solitary confinement, where he endured brutal torture. He went on to become a six-term senator from Arizona and was the unsuccessful Republican nominee for president in 2008. A controversial figure during his political career, he was nevertheless one of the most respected men in the Senate for over 30 years.
