Everything is meaningless! What a fabulous choice for a Christmas series, a study in the book of Ecclesiastes! But that’s exactly why we are doing this study because I think we may have been reading the book of Ecclesiastes all wrong. I’m not so sure these are the rantings of a man who once served God who has now lost his way. I think these are the reflections, even at times the confessions, of a man at the end of his life and he is saying to you and to me, “Learn from my mistakes.” He is saying to us that everything is meaningless, like a chasing after the wind…unless. Yes! Unless! He is telling us what not to do through this beautifully written wisdom book using creative and poetic styles of writing, employing contrast, mockery, and confession. There is meaning in this life. We all desperately crave meaning. God created us with this sacred appetite for being enriched by experiences in this life that await all of us. The question is will you grasp them or will you self-condemn yourself to a life that is more akin to a chasing after the wind, always reaching but never clasping the rich meaning this life promises? Everything is in fact meaningless…unless.
