A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: On this birthday of John Calvin, we remember his contribution to the 16th century Reformation movement. Trained as a lawyer, Calvin was much more systematic in his theology, emphasizing God's sovereignty and power, in contrast to Martin Luther, who emphasized God's justification of the sinner by grace through faith in Christ. Both men were biblical theologians and recognized the need for reform in the Church. We thank God for these reformers and pray their emphasis upon God's actions may move us daily to celebrate His love in Christ.
