Listen Later

It’s Halloween season and you’re looking for some spooky listening to set the mood? The 2 Guys and a Chainsaw podcast always has you covered with its October lineup of Halloween-themed episodes. We recap this year’s annual tradition of Halloween-themed horror films, according to Todd and Craig, which put us in the holiday mood like nothing else could.

From slashers to made-for-TV movies to family-friendly favorites, there was something for everyone this October! Spoiler alert: It definitely leaned closer to “family-friendly” this year than in previous years. And if you’re lucky enough to be a patron on Patreon (there’s no better time than now, FYI), you’ll also get access to two exclusive minisodes that cover even more spooky ground.

    Full Episodes:

    • Goosebumps (2015): This family-friendly horror-comedy is a love letter to R.L. Stine and his Goosebumps books. The hosts note that while they were too old for Goosebumps when it came out, they can appreciate the film’s appeal to younger audiences and its faithfulness to the spirit of Stine’s work. They were particularly impressed by the film’s clever conceit of making the books themselves dangerous.
    • Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981): This made-for-TV slasher film may not be the scariest movie out there, but it’s a suspenseful and emotional story that will stay with you. The hosts discuss the film’s unique place in the history of made-for-TV horror and were impressed by its ability to tell a compelling story without relying on excessive violence and gore. The ending is particularly ambiguous, leaving viewers to wonder if the scarecrow is truly supernatural or simply a symbol of the characters’ guilt and fear.
    • The Worst Witch (1986): This British TV movie is a childhood favorite for many, and the hosts are no exception. While acknowledging its low-budget production values and cheesy special effects, they find the film to be a charming and entertaining watch, with catchy songs and memorable characters. The Worst Witch is a fun and safe Halloween pick for the whole family.
    • Sleepy Hollow (1999): Tim Burton’s gothic horror film is a visually stunning and atmospheric take on the classic Washington Irving story. The hosts compare the film to the Hammer horror films of the 1960s and 1970s, and they praise Burton’s use of practical effects. They also note that the film is more violent than they expected, but they ultimately recommend it as a stylish and entertaining Halloween watch.
    • The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022): This Netflix original may not be a critical darling, but it’s a fun and festive celebration of Halloween. The hosts were impressed by the film’s production values and special effects, and they found the story to be enjoyable, even if the writing wasn’t the strongest. They compare the film to a haunted house attraction, with its constant stream of visual delights.
    • Minisodes (Patreon Exclusive):

      • The Haunted Mask (1995): The hosts revisit a classic episode of the Goosebumps TV series, discussing its creepy atmosphere and effective scares. They were impressed by the episode’s ability to capture the spirit of R.L. Stine’s books, and they found it to be a nostalgic and enjoyable watch.54555657…
      • The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1949): The hosts take a look at the classic Disney adaptation of Washington Irving’s story, praising its beautiful animation and faithful adaptation. They discuss the film’s lasting legacy and its influence on later adaptations, including Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow.
