The love of God is often described as unconditional, selfless, and all-encompassing- The Bible states that "God is love" (1 John 4:8), and that love is the essence of God's nature. God's love is not based on what we do or who we are, but rather on HIS character. Similarly, a mother's love is not based on what her child does or who they become, but rather on the fact that they are her child.
