Sermon Notes—"A new And Better Covenant"
 Scripture: Jeremiah 31:1-26
"We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ."
Colossians 1:28 (NIV84)

Lesson Notes:

27"Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and the seed of beast. 28And it shall come to pass that as I have watched over them to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring harm, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, declares the Lord. 29In those days they shall no longer say: " 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.' 30But everyone shall die for his own iniquity. Each man who eats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge. 31"Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more."
Jeremiah 31:27–34 (ESV)

Truth #1:

We don't bear the GUILT of other's sins, but we experience the CONSEQUENCES of their sin.

20The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

Ezekiel 18:20 (ESV)

Truth #2:

When it comes to following God, there's no escaping PERSONAL responsibility (no sour grapes!).

Definition:

A covenant is an AGREEMENT between two or more parties in which OBLIGATIONS are placed on one or both.
The old covenant between God and Israel is called the Law, which Moses brought down from Mt Sinai.

Why would God make a new covenant? And how is the new covenant better than the old?

15I don't really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don't do it. Instead, I do what I hate. 16But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good.

Romans 7:15–16 (NLT)

The only fault with the old covenant is man's INABILITY to KEEP it.

21I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22I love God's law with all my heart. 23But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?

Romans 7:21–24 (NLT)

Commands have no power to CHANGE the HEART.

6But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.

Hebrews 8:6 (ESV)

Jesus is the mediator of the new covenant, and everyone who believes in Him receives a NEW HEART with the desire and ability to do GOD'S WILL.
