Robert Hunter | Episode 1188

Robert Hunter is a Scottish ceramicist based in Glasgow, soon to be relocating to Yorkshire in 2026. Robert’s work is inspired by themes of time and place, using natural materials such as wild clay and his own developed ash glazes. Each piece reflects both his stage in life and the landscape around him. Having studied in Aberdeen, worked and learned in Mallorca, Spain, and completed a recent two-month residency at Starworks in North Carolina, Robert has travelled widely and gained insight from many great potters.

Why does making this move and going full time matter for you personally?
feel like the move to York and taking that leap of faith, I’ve always kind of trusted my gut and it feels right. I’ve kind of had a lot of good traction recently and this fresh start will give me a push off the edge. Go for it. Don’t look back.
Whose life do you feel like is being improved because of your work?
I do make bigger pieces but at the moment I’m making a lot of table work. And even today I had someone come around to pick up a piece and I told them the story behind the piece and getting the message out there and people enjoying them, I absolutely love that. Getting that feedback puts a big smile on my face. I think this gamble is going to pay off well.
What does success look like during the first year?
Oh, that’s a good question. I probably should have had more of a business plan to it, which will probably come in the next weeks and months. I think it will be more getting into the bigger shows across the UK. And I think success will just be being happy doing what I am doing.
Does that mean you have a launch strategy for getting this off the ground?
I’m going to purchase a new kiln which is 4 times better than the one I’ve got in my current studio. I do kind of have a plan, as long as it keeps as it’s going financially I will be quite happy.
What strengths do you feel like a person needs to do this?
I want to say resilience. I have gone through a lot of stuff in the past and I think that has made me a stronger person. I would say resilience and just a drive and confidence to go and risk it.
What skills do you feel Ike you need to develop in the next few months?
Accounting. (Laughter) I wouldn’t say it’s something that I need to develop, it’s something that I am going to have to do is network. I am know in Scotland but for me moving out to England I am starting fresh.
