Publisher's Summary:
Nursing student Florence Chipiti mentors three young students from Zambia. As she tells them how her mind works, they, too, have something to teach her. They have endured the loss of a parent, the attacks of a predator, and the fear of not being able to make the grade. Florence has a controlling father known far and wide as the Honey Badger, who demands she become a state certified registered nurse, all from the influence of a book read to him by his tutor, Wellington Taylor. He has also threatened death to any man who interrupts her studies. This fear makes her resist the advances of a suitor, only to learn that the man has already made arrangements with her father. The young nurses learn that the path to our dreams is not always a straight line, that the detours which seem to take us the farthest from our goals often lead to our greatest discoveries of what is important and worth saving. Just as she is about to marry the man who has won her heart, the sexual predator known as the hyena, once again stalks the young women. Will their education allow them to overcome fear and the evil of trafficking? This sweeping novel of hope and determination connects the generations and continues the romance begun in The Bride Price and continued in The Academy.
Members Reviews:
I would recommend this book.
This book had a lot more characters to keep track of, which was a little confusing at times. I felt it was more descriptive, that was nice as I learned what a honey badger was and learned about some of the other animals and trees in Africa. I liked how Jethro met his end by his own doing, by the animal that he resembled because of his actions.
If you want to understand the Africa in which more ...
If you want to understand the Africa in which more than 200+ school girls can be kidnapped (and not returned) because they are pursuing an educationâand might, just might find their voice as strong women able to help shape societyâthen youâll want to read A Passing Grade, third in a trilogy that examines the challenges girls and young women face as they press into the 21st century. Through the lives of three friends who swear theyâll stick together and support each other through nurseâs training, they face societal roadblocksâthe sex and slave trade just one among many.
As a former Peace Corps Volunteer in Africa and head of her family trust supporting education for girls, the author has traveled widely in Africa and knows whereof she speaks. A powerful story.
A Saga Novel
Although it can stand alone, this saga novel is best enjoyed as the third in the series of novels by Suzanne Popp. New characters are introduced and familiar characters from previous novels reappear. As an American I found the cultural differences intriguing and at times baffling. I think the author managed to educate me, unawares, on many of the perils of this foreign land through the magic of story telling.
