Soon will be the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.Today we look at what is meant by the phrase "sola scriptura." Was this issue in play prior to the Reformation? Does this doctrine do away with all creeds and confessions? How did the main reformers understand it? It is good to figure out if what has been handed down to us in the form of traditions, is faithful or not. What about the practice of parsing the biblical record into dispensations? Is it OK to love the Old Testament and appreciate how the whole Bible fits together? Are there guidelines about how to handle the Old Testament? Can the New Testament really be understood without a deep understanding of the Old Testament? Is there a narrative backbone that stretches through the Old and New Testaments?
