Journey Church SC

A Present King and an Absent Army

Listen Later

This powerful exploration of 1 Samuel chapters 4-7 confronts us with a sobering truth: God is not a tool at our disposal, but a holy king to be feared, trusted, and obeyed. We journey through Israel's devastating defeats against the Philistines, witnessing how they treated the Ark of the Covenant like a holy good luck charm rather than approaching God with genuine repentance. The nation asked the wrong question—not 'What is God calling us to do?' but 'How do we fix this outcome?' Their self-devised plan resulted in catastrophic loss: 30,000 soldiers dead, the Ark captured, and Eli's corrupt sons killed. Yet even in Israel's failure, God's purposes prevailed. When the Philistines placed the Ark in Dagon's temple, God didn't need human defenders—He toppled their idol and brought plagues upon them until they recognized His holiness. The message challenges our modern tendency to devise plans and then ask God to bless them, to treat Him as someone who serves our agenda rather than the sovereign King whose will we should seek first. True victory comes not through better strategies but through returning to God with whole hearts, putting away idols, and serving Him alone.
