E14 - Genes, culture and human nature: what makes us human? With Jorge Rocha

No other species complains about a shortage of teachers. It sounds like a joke, but it says a lot about what makes us human.

On the podcast A Próxima Evolução, Mário Marques talks with Jorge Rocha about what sets us apart from other species. The answer isn't only in our genes, nor only in culture. It lies in the way the two are intertwined: our biology prepares us to learn from others, to trust what we are taught and to depend on the people around us. A human being without culture, says Jorge Rocha, is as impossible to imagine as a bird without feathers and without a beak. The conversation also covers the history of our species as told by our genes, and the old question of whether we are good or bad by nature. Jorge Rocha is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto and a researcher in human evolutionary genetics. He has studied populations in Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Angola, Mozambique, Namibia and Botswana, and is the author of the book O Caminho de Adis Abeba. Uma viagem pela singularidade humana.

In this episode you will discover:
    • why most human genetic diversity lies between individuals rather than between populations
    • what dual inheritance theory is and why it says we are not "genes or culture"
    • why no other species depends so much on others to raise its young
    • how our tendency to believe others makes us vulnerable to misinformation
    • why what unites us is also what divides us Perhaps being human isn't something we are born with.

Perhaps it's something we learn from one another.

E13 - A conversation about climate change. No alarmism. No downplaying.

Seeking the truth. We know what is causing climate change. We have the technology to stop it. So why aren't we doing it?

On the podcast A Próxima Evolução, Mário Marques talks with Professor Filipe Duarte Santos about the part of the problem that gets the least attention: us. Our brains value the present far more than the future, the economy rewards immediate profit, and the way we see nature, as something separate from ourselves, matters more than it seems. The conversation also covers the Earth's climate history, the scientific evidence that current warming is caused by humans, and how Homo sapiens managed to adapt to changes that other human species could not survive.

Filipe Duarte Santos is one of Portugal's most recognised scientists in the field of climate change. Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and President of the National Council for Environment and Sustainable Development (CNADS), he has been studying the impacts of climate change in Portugal since the 1980s.

In this episode you will discover:
    • what temporal discounting is and why it makes us postpone important decision
    • the role of the prefrontal cortex in how we think about the long term
    • the seven human determinants of sustainability
    • why cultural evolution, and not just biological evolution, allowed us to survive
    • why alarmism and eco-anxiety don't help us act better

The planet will still be here. The question is whether we will manage to change in time.

God, Sin and Eternal Life: An Unfiltered Conversation with Father Carlos Almada

There are questions that many people have but few say out loud. What is God? What is the Church for? And does it make sense to believe in a time dominated by science and technology?

In the podcast A Próxima Evolução, Mário Marques is joined by Father Carlos Almada, a young priest with a direct and approachable way of speaking, for a conversation about faith, the meaning of life and the place of the Catholic Church in today's world. They discuss how a priestly vocation comes about, what revelation and tradition mean within the Church, the image of a punishing God that Jesus came to contradict, what the Bible truly tells us when read beyond its literal meaning, and why so many people have drifted away from the Church without ever truly understanding its message.

Carlos Almada was ordained a priest at 25, after 9 years in the seminary. He stands out for his ability to address the challenges of our time in language that is accessible and close to people, particularly young people, touching on themes such as the crisis of meaning, mental health and faith lived in everyday life.

In this episode you will discover:
    - how the Catholic Church works from the inside, between revelation, tradition and the role of the Pope
    - why the image of God as a punitive judge does not match what Jesus actually taught
    - what the Bible tells us about suffering, forgiveness and eternal life
    - why science and faith are not opposites, and what Eucharistic miracles have to do with it
    - how people's distance from the Church often comes from not knowing it, rather than rejecting it

Faith does not begin with certainties. It begins with the courage to ask questions that have no easy answer.

Why We Suffer and What We Can Do About It: A Conversation on Buddhism and Consciousness with Tsering Paldron

Most of the suffering we feel does not come from what happens. It comes from the story we tell about what happens.

That difference, apparently small, changes everything. In the podcast A Próxima Evolução, Mário Marques is joined by Tsering Paldron, a teacher of Tibetan Buddhism for over three decades and a practitioner for more than fifty years. The conversation explores what Buddhism truly teaches about the human condition, not as a dogmatic religion, but as a practical method of inner transformation. They discuss the four noble truths, the difference between suffering and the subtle dissatisfaction Buddha called Dukkha, how the ego keeps us permanently in a defensive mode, and what meditation does to the mind when practised regularly. Tsering Paldron has dedicated her life to teaching Buddhist philosophy and practice through seminars, courses and retreats in Portugal and across Europe. She completed the traditional three-year intensive retreat in France, received teachings from Tibetan Buddhist masters in India, Nepal and Bhutan, and is the author of several books, including The Art of Life, The Alchemy of Pain and Ageing like Buddha.

In this episode you will discover:
    • what Buddhism actually is and why Buddha never answered the question about the origin of the universe
    • why suffering begins in the narrative we construct and not in the facts themselves
    • what karma is and why it goes far beyond negative consequences
    • how meditation clarifies the mind and helps us distinguish what is happening from the story we invent about it
    • why neutrality is not enough and what Buddhism says about actively cultivating good

How the Body Performs Under Pressure: Physiology, Stress and Longevity with José Soares

Your body is constantly sending signals. About the sleep that never feels like enough, about the tiredness that won't go away, about the decisions that make no sense. The problem is that nobody ever taught us how to read those signals.

In the podcast A Próxima Evolução, Mário Marques is joined by José Soares, full professor at the University of Porto with over three decades dedicated to the study of human physiology, performance and longevity. The conversation covers what science knows about how the body responds to stress, fatigue and effort, and what that means in practice, whether for an elite athlete or a corporate leader. They also discuss what sets apart the people who stay consistent, the illusion that happiness is a choice, how digital distractions alter our biology, and anxiety crises, including ones both of them experienced firsthand. José Soares is a physiologist and full professor at the University of Porto. He has worked with high-performance athletes, including Miguel Oliveira, and has applied his knowledge of physiology to the corporate world, collaborating with organisations such as Deloitte to help teams manage energy and performance more effectively.

In this episode you will discover:
    • why the brain makes irrational decisions when tired, and what to do about it
    • how breathing regulates the nervous system and can shift your state within minutes
    • why the idea that "happiness depends on you" can create more anxiety than it relieves
    • what separates the people who achieve their goals from those who fall short
    • what two health professionals learned from experiencing anxiety crises themselves
Performance does not start in the mind. It starts in the body the mind lives in.

As tensões geopolíticas vão aumentar novamente.

    ________

E5 - Climate Crisis, AI and the Future of Humanity with Viriato Soromenho-Marques

Climate indicators are alarming. Geopolitical tensions have escalated again. Artificial intelligence is advancing without regulation. And we keep pressing the accelerator. But is the problem really external?

In this episode of A Próxima Evolução, Mário Marques talks with Viriato Soromenho-Marques, philosopher, full professor at the University of Lisbon, founder of Quercus and one of the most lucid voices in Portuguese environmental and political thought. The conversation moves through the three great existential threats of our time, the ecological crisis, the risk of nuclear conflict and the acceleration of technology without ethical oversight, and how these feed into one another. They discuss the Anthropocene, the difference between crisis and collapse, what the fall of the Roman Empire tells us about civilisations that disappear, and why no external solution will be enough without an inner shift in the values that brought us here. Viriato Soromenho-Marques has spent decades studying environmental ethics, political philosophy and the theory of responsibility, engaging with thinkers such as Hans Jonas, Hannah Arendt and Kant, always with a voice that is distinctly his own, grounded and deeply humanist.

    In this episode you'll discover:
    • the three existential threats and how they influence each other
